埃克斯特大学成立于1955年，位于英格兰西南的德文郡首府埃克斯特市，于1922年获得皇家令状升格为大学（当时称为西南英格兰大学学院），最早的历史可以追溯到1855年建立的一所艺术学校。埃克斯特大学现设有三个校园，分别位于埃克塞特市、德文郡和康沃尔郡附近的法尔茅斯。
